Tensions Rise as Discord Bans Shapes Inc Over Developer Policy Breach

Things have escalated between Shapes Inc and Discord. Shapes Inc, a platform that lets users create AI-driven “Shapes” for Discord, has been removed from the platform—and they’re not taking it quietly. The company voiced its frustration on X (formerly Twitter), accusing Discord of unfairly targeting them. They’re urging their community of creators to speak out across Reddit, X, and TikTok, asking users to share stories about how Shapes has helped them. It’s starting to resemble a coordinated online protest.

Users on Reddit quickly picked up on the situation, especially after receiving unexpected emails from Discord. These messages claimed that the Shapes Inc platform and related applications had violated Discord’s Developer Terms and Policy. The key allegations include giving Shapes access to application tokens and API data, and enabling unauthorized uses—particularly using message content to train AI models. That last accusation has sparked major concern.

Discord responded by disabling the associated applications and instructed users to delete any API data shared with Shapes. The company even warned that failure to comply could lead to “further action,” including the possible deletion of user accounts. That understandably set off alarm bells across the community.

Shapes Inc strongly denied the accusations. In a post on their subreddit, a representative claimed Discord shut down a platform serving over 10 million users and supporting more than 400,000 live “shapes.” They described Discord’s actions as abrupt, unfair, and lacking empathy. Shapes Inc insists it never used message content for AI training.

The company also questioned why other bots like MEE6 and Dyno—which reportedly require users to provide bot tokens for specific features—haven’t faced similar enforcement. This has raised broader questions about whether Discord applies its policies consistently.

In the meantime, users are scrambling to clean up. Many are trying to remove their Shapes applications from the Discord developer portal, though some found their apps had already been deleted by Discord.

While panic initially spread, it now appears that user accounts themselves are safe. Several users mistakenly believed their accounts had been disabled, only to realize it was the bots that were affected—not their personal accounts. So far, no confirmed reports of user account bans have surfaced.
