Some OneNote users on macOS have encountered a significant issue where the application abruptly stops syncing and displays a “Sync error: please refresh this notebook to continue syncing” message, accompanied by error code 0xE000006C. This problem predominantly affects users operating on older Apple hardware, such as iMacs and MacBooks running macOS Catalina (10.15) or Mojave (10.14). Upon investigation, it appears that a recent update to the OneNote application has rendered it compatible only with macOS 13 (Ventura) and newer versions. This change has left users on earlier macOS versions unable to sync their notebooks effectively. Interestingly, there have been isolated reports of users on macOS Sequoia 15.5 experiencing similar issues, though these cases are less common and not fully understood. For those affected, a suggested workaround involves reverting to an older version of OneNote, specifically version 16.33, which reportedly functions correctly on earlier macOS versions. Users can download this version from Microsoft’s official update history page for Office for Mac. If this solution proves ineffective, accessing OneNote through the web application or mobile devices remains a viable alternative, as these platforms continue to operate without the syncing issues observed on the macOS desktop application.
