Discord Rolls Out Server Tags and Gradient Roles to Select Servers

Discord has initiated a limited rollout of its new server tags and gradient roles features, currently available to only 0.1% of servers. These additions are part of the platform’s “tierless boosting” system, allowing servers to allocate boosts toward specific perks rather than following the traditional level-based unlocks.

Server tags enable community members to display custom 4-character identifiers, accompanied by an icon, representing their server affiliations across Discord. Gradient roles introduce visually appealing color transitions and holographic effects to role displays, enhancing the distinction of important roles within a server. Both features require the application of three server boosts to activate, independent of the server’s boost level.

Some users have attempted to increase their chances of accessing these features by creating numerous servers. One user reported generating approximately 700-800 servers to be included in the limited rollout. They suggested that setting a server to community mode and utilizing certain tools could reveal the availability of these new options.

The restricted release has led to frustration among long-time Discord users who feel excluded from early access to new features. Some have expressed dissatisfaction with the experimental nature of such rollouts, noting that despite years of Nitro subscription, they have not been part of any beta features.

These new features follow the removal of guild tags in March 2025, indicating Discord’s ongoing efforts to refine server customization options. The current experimental rollout aims to assess user engagement before a broader release.

For servers with access, owners and administrators can enable these perks through the Server Boosts tab, provided they have at least three boosts available. Once activated, gradient roles can be applied to multiple roles, offering enhanced color customization that complements existing features like role icons.

The timeline for a wider release of these features remains uncertain, as Discord continues to evaluate user feedback and engagement metrics to inform its deployment strategy.
